The committee’s members are representatives of the state, the tourism industry and local government. According to the tourism ministry, among the committee’s intentions is to ensure closer cooperation between tourism industry representatives in order to record and improve the conference centers that already exist. The committee will see to the effective utilization of facilities that are not in use in order to conduct international conferences. Another aim is to promote the image of Greece as a conference tourism destination throughout the global tourism market through the country’s active participation in tourism fairs and specialized advertising campaigns abroad. The conference tourism committee will operate in Athens and Thessaloniki alongside the cities’ Greek city break destinations campaign. “Conference tourism is a very important product for Greek tourism as it will produce income for the Greek economy and attract high quality visitors who will act as ambassadors for our country abroad,” Mr. Spiliotopoulos said.
