Alexandroupolis Harbor to be Privatized

Shipping giants Dubai Ports and Maersk Lines have expressed an interest for the Alexandroupolis harbor, which seems to be the next Greek port to be privatized after foreign investors took over the management of Greece’s two biggest ports, Piraeus and Thessaloniki, in regards to container terminals.

The interest foreign companies have for the Alexandroupolis harbor is due to the ports position as it is located near Romania and Bulgaria, and its infrastructure projects that are in progress.

Danish firm Maersk, which also had expressed an interest for the Piraeus port, has also turned an eye to the port of Kavala in an attempt to establish itself within Southeastern Europe.

In regards to the Thessaloniki port, the Chinese ambassador to Greece, Luo Linquan, recently met with the prefect of Thessaloniki, Panagiotis Psomiadis.

Their discussions evolved around the selection of Chinese company Hutschison to manage the Thessaloniki port’s container terminal.

Mr. Psomiadis believes that this cooperation will open new avenues for the two countries and contribute to the commercial relations between Greece and China.

On his part the Chinese ambassador expressed his satisfaction with the diplomatic relations between the two countries, which spans 36 years.
