Museum of Cycladic Art Relaunches Cypriot Antiquities Exhibition

Following the Museum’s renovation and the new thematic displays Scenes of Daily Life in Antiquity and Ancient Greek Art, the MCA re-opened its permanent exhibition Cyprus: Aspects of Ancient Art and Culture, featuring  the Thanos N. Zintilis Collection of Cypriot Antiquities, one of the most important of its kind worldwide and second only to the Museum’s renowned Cycladic Art collection.

The display showcases 550 objects dating from the prehistoric times down to the Medieval and Modern periods, grouped according to time period and category. Rich in style, decoration, and imaginative shapes of Cypriot pottery represent the collection’s core, along with sculptures illustrating the development of the human form and thematic units embracing nearly all aspects of everyday and public life: religion, weaving, perfume making, funerary rites, writing, metalworking, coins, seal stones, and foreign relations. The peripheral display also includes glass vases and jewelry displayed by chronology and category.

Comprehensive texts, maps, chronological charts, as well as multimedia applications provide illuminating information about the exhibits, while special emphasis is laid on the widely spread in antiquity Cypriot copper, the commodity that brought wealth and well-being to the island, but also on the history of writing and coinage.

In general, the breadth of Cypriot archaeology and art across its long history from the oldest settlements to the height of the historical city-kingdoms, but also Cyprus’s relations, both cultural and commercial, with the wider Mediterranean world at different stages of antiquity, evolves on interactive surfaces within an ingenious digital design with scientifically documented material, accessible to students, the average visitor, but also to the specialist.
