Speaking during the annual conference of the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE), Minister Kountoura presented the tourism ministry’s strategy for Greek tourism’s digital transition and focus on innovation. Regarding the revamp of Visit Greece website, the website will be available in Greek, English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Arabic, Chinese and Turkish. The portal will offer, in one place, all the information users seek when looking up destination Greece, along with smart interactive applications through modern virtual and augmented reality technologies. “Aiming to establish Greece as a 365 days a year destination, we are using all available digital tools to promote our tourism product,” the minister said. Among other things, the tourism ministry’s strategy includes programs and actions to support the digital transformation of tourism start-ups and existing small- and medium-sized enterprises, in order to boost their competitiveness. Following the codification of Greece’s tourism legislation, the ministry is proceeding with the digital transition of the services provided by the tourism ministry and the GNTO to citizens, businesses and foreign visitors. Moreover, the ministry is going ahead with the digital upgrading of tourism education and the upgrading of curricula based on international standards. The ministry’s strategy will also introduce Big Data to provide the actual contribution of tourism to the economy for marketing purposes; and the creation of a digital library/archive to promote the cultural and natural wealth of Greece, including attractions and tourism routes. According to the minister, through digital transformation in tourism, the ministry is aiming to ensure high growth rates for the sector in the coming years, in a sustainable and responsible way, which is at the core of its strategy. “In our plans for years to come, tourism will not only use innovation but will also create it,” she said.
