Athens’ ancient neighborhood opens on June 21

Visitors and residents of the Greek capital will soon have the chance to discover the hidden treasures of an ancient Athens neighborhood that was uncovered during excavations for the construction of the Acropolis Museum.

Dating from the Classical period through to Byzantine times, the ruins are currently visible through the glass floor at the entrance of the Acropolis Museum, which is located on the south slope of the Acropolis Hill.

After years of excavations, the site is almost ready to reveal its “secrets” to the public.

The museum’s archaeologists and staff are currently working on the final details in order for the site to be open on June 21, one day after the museum celebrates its 10th anniversary since its grand opening on June 20, 2009.

The site will also be enriched with a display of the most significant removable objects of the excavation, which will offer valuable information regarding the everyday life in ancient Athens.

The underground collection will be accessible with the Acropolis Museum’s general admission ticket from June 21 onward.
