Major upgrade and infrastructure projects budgeted at 4.2 billion euros are in the pipeline in the Central Greece Region, announced Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis this week. The PM announced the news during his presentation of the “Development Program for Central Greece 2030” while visiting the region. Mitsotakis said his government had doubled funding to the region, which includes the island of Evia and popular towns such as Karpenissi and Galaxidi, for a total of 540 works. He underlined that the country’s recovery fund was aimed at “supporting the region’s choices” and contributing to the implementation of proposals. He underlined that a top priority is the fair distribution of funds that will go towards works that ensure balanced development countrywide. Central Greece Region. Projects to be covered by the funding include the completion of E65, the Central Greece roadway and particularly the Lamia–Amfissa segment works which are scheduled to begin in the coming period, he said. Mitsotakis said the southern section of the E65 axis will be operational by the end of the year, while the Bralos – Amfissa section is under construction. He added that the railway upgrade plan foresees the completion of works on the double track high-speed railway line Tithorea–Lianokladi–Domokou and the installation by the end of autumn of the remote control system across the Athens–Thessaloniki-Promachonas axis aiming to establish the area into a transportation hub. It should be noted that the head-on collision of two trains in Tempi, which killed 57 people last month, was in the Thessaly Region which borders with the Central Greece Region. Transport Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis admitted that “had a complete remote surveillance and signaling system been in place, the accident would not have happened”. Additionally, the restoration of the traditional Amfissa olive grove was moving forward as was the Northern Evia road network, which he said will finally bring the island out of isolation and create new prospects. He also referred to resources that will be channeled into tourism activities in the overall region. Mitsotakis said the ambitious “Evia Meta” project, aimed at restoring Northern Evia, which was devastated by massive fires in the summer of 2021, was also progressing. Lastly, the Greek PM referred to funds allocated towards other projects in health, education and sports, key of which the Acropolis Rally which every year promotes the region and gives it a financial boost.
