Mitsis Hotel Group Plans to Revive the Kamena Vourla Thermal Springs

Greek hospitality group Mitsis Hotels announced this week that it would be moving ahead with an ambitious plan to redevelop the thermal springs in the coastal town of Kamena Vourla located in Central Greece.

 The plan was presented to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis who at the time was on tour of the Central Greece Region and announced a total of 4.2 billion euros to go into local upgrade projects. Other government officials attending the event included Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias, Finance Minister Christos Staikouras, Shipping Minister Yiannis Plakiotakis, Central Greece Region Governor Fanis Spanos and Kamena Vourla Mayor Giannis Sikiotis.

Mitsis Hotels Group will invest 50 million euros in the project, which foresees the upgrade and modernization of a 475,000m2 property, the restoration and renovation of the deserted “Radion” and “Thronion” hotels and of the “Asclepios” hydrotherapy center, the renovation of the “Hippocrates” hydrotherapy center, the upgrade of the Mitsis Galini Hotel, the utilization of the “Georgala” thermal spring, as well as the creation of green spaces, parking areas, road works to facilitate access and the overhaul of the coastal front to include the construction of a pedestrian walkway, a bicycle lane, and a park.

The Radion and Thronion Hotels, constructed in the 1930s attracted international VIPs until the mid-1980s when these closed. The reopening  of the hotels is of great importance for the town and the Central Greece Region.

According to Mitsis Hotels, the projects will create at least 500 new jobs and generate more than 200 million euros in tax revenues.

“Tourism in Greece has changed significantly. The product offered is constantly improving and we need a good workforce, executives who can serve visitors and their increasing need for services,” said Managing Director at Mitsis Hotels, Stavros Mitsis.

Commenting on the Mitsis Group plan, Mitsotakis said that Greek tourism had entered a new era. “We are cautiously optimistic although all the messages are encouraging. Today Greece has become a tourist destination of first choice. We are opening up to new markets, expanding the tourist season, and I strongly believe in the [potential of] thermal springs; a field of development that will allow us to expand the tourist season,” he said. Mitsotakis added that he hoped Fthiotida would soon evolve into a leading spa tourism destination.

The project comes after Mitsis Hotels announced that it was rolling out a 500-million-euro investment plan to develop new tourism projects in Greece. Set to be completed by 2027, the program includes the development of new luxury hotels on the islands of Mykonos, Rhodes and Crete, and at the port of Piraeus. Last year, Mitsis Hotels was listed among the “31 Most Sustainable Companies in Greece” by the QualityNet Foundation.

Active for over 45 years in tourism and hospitality, the Mitsis Hotels Group portfolio includes 19 hotels in Athens, Kamena Vourla, Crete, Kos, Rhodes and Halkidiki.
