AEGEAN Extends Partnership with Emirates for Athens-New York Flights

Emirates and AEGEAN on Tuesday announced the next step of their cooperation which sees the addition of the Athens-New York (Newark) route to the codeshare agreement launched between the two airlines a year ago.

With a single ticket, Emirates’ passengers can now stopover in Athens before benefiting from AEGEAN’s connections to popular Greek and European destinations, while AEGEAN travelers will have access to Emirates’ flights between Athens and Dubai and additionally to flights between Athens and Newark.

The addition of the Athens-New York (Newark) route to the codeshare agreement offers passengers the benefit of a convenient and seamless booking experience, single check in and consistent baggage policy.

“This pivotal step brings Athens and New York closer for all AEGEAN passengers whereas at the same time facilitates seamless travel to popular Greek and European destinations through our network, for all passengers who select Emirates as their gateway to Greece,” said AEGEAN CEO Dimitris Gerogiannis.

The codeshare agreement between Emirates and AEGEAN launched in August 2022, offering travelers a seamless booking experience from Emirates’ network to eight domestic Greek points (Mykonos, Santorini, Corfu, Heraklion, Rhodes, Thessaloniki, Alexandroupolis, Chania) via Athens, using a single ticket and one baggage policy. AEGEAN had also placed its code on Emirates-operated flights between Dubai and Athens, allowing their customers to benefit from seamless travel between both hubs.

Through the codeshare partnership, AEGEAN offers flights to 17 domestic destinations and 53 additional points in regional Europe and the Middle East from its Athens hub, while customers can access Emirates’ global network of over 140 destinations spanning six continents from its hub in Dubai. The combined network of both airlines will reach 200 destinations globally.

According to Emirates’ Chief Commercial Officer Adnan Kazim, more than 16,800 passengers have benefited from the codeshare agreement between the two airlines since its launch.

“We’re pleased to expand our successful partnership with AEGEAN to include our direct service between Athens and Newark,” Kazim said, adding that by adding more routes to the joint Emirates-AEGEAN network, more customers will benefit convenient travel options.

Emirates currently has 29 codeshare and 117 interline partners in over 100 countries, expanding its global footprint and offering travelers seamless connectivity to more than 5,250 destinations beyond its network.

Emirates serves over 140 cities on six continents through its Dubai hub. It operates the world’s largest fleet of modern wide-body Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft. The airline’s presence in the Greek market began in 1996. In the last 27 years, Emirates has offered its services to more than 4.5 million passengers in the Greek market. The first airline to directly connect Athens with Dubai, Emirates since March 2017 offers a direct, daily flight that connects the Greek capital with Newark all year round.

AEGEAN’s expansion in 2023 is the biggest in the company’s history. The airline this year is offering a total of 18 million seats and expects to carry 15.3-15.4 million passengers, surpassing its record 2019 figure of 15 million. AEGEAN’s route schedule for 2023 covers a network of 165 destinations (30 domestic and 135 international) in 46 countries from the company’s 10 bases in Greece and abroad, with a fleet of 76 aircraft, of which 28 are the brand new Airbus A320 and A321 neo.
