Photo source: Metaxa Hospitality Group As part of ongoing efforts to upgrade services offered, protect the environment, and support local communities, the Metaxa Hospitality Group announced this week that it had teamed up with the Lassithi Plateau Agricultural Cooperative for sustainable food production practices in tourism. The news was announced during a special event in Lassithi, where they presented the “Regenerative Agriculture for the Lassithi Plateau and its People | Towards a Sustainable Food Destination” program. The Metaxa Group’s new program is inspired by the principles of regenerative agriculture and provides producer members of the Lassithi Plateau Agricultural Cooperative with information and training opportunities in regenerative agriculture practices. Photo source: Metaxa Hospitality Group Under the program, producers provide the Group’s hotels on Crete and Santorini with products that are fully integrated into the culinary experience while ensuring producers’ income, investing in the destination, and ensuring the health of the soil. In the first months of implementation, 11 tons of organic fresh fruit and vegetables have been produced. The Metaxas Group regenerative agriculture program carried out in collaboration with Local Food Experts, aims to establish Crete and the Lassithi Plateau as a sustainable food destination that works with the local community. “With the ‘Regenerative Agriculture for the Lassithi Plateau and its People | Towards a Sustainable Food Destination’ program, Metaxa Hospitality Group confirms in practice its strategy for sustainable development and the well-being of residents in the local communities where we operate,” said Metaxa Hospitality Group CEO Andreas Metaxas. Photo source: Metaxa Hospitality Group “Under the principles of responsibility and contribution, together with the Lassithi Plateau Agricultural Cooperative, we are implementing an ambitious but very realistic plan with high added value for the environment, primary sector production and sustainable hospitality”. On his part, Theodoros Moudatsos, the head of the Lassithi Plateau Agricultural Cooperative, thanked Andreas Metaxa and the Metaxa Hospitality Group for the initiative that “focuses on the value added of the local community and highlights the leading role of local producers and products in hospitality services. I invite all producer in the plateau to actively participate in the project.” Earlier this year, the Metaxa Hospitality Group received the Environmental Initiative of the Year award during the Travel Industry Awards 2023 by TTG in London.
