In an interview to SKAI television, Kefalogianni said Greece had established itself as a leading world destination and that the ministry was aiming to take advantage of new media such as TikTok to strengthen the country’s online presence. Greece achieved a record year in 2023 with international arrivals reaching 33.4 million in the January-November period and exceeding pre-pandemic 2019 levels. Kefalogianni went on to add that other key priorities for 2024 include sustainability actions aimed at developing a tourism sector that respects the environment and local communities while ensuring balance. The minister had previously said that the country is making efforts to attract investments in this direction with the ultimate goal to become a frontrunner in sustainable tourism practices while ensuring resilience to crisis and market shocks. The extension of the tourist season is a step in this direction, she said adding that enhancing the tourism product on offer with new alternative options was also high on the agenda. Photo source: Greek Tourism Ministry Kefalogianni went on to stress the importance of absorbing all EU resilience resources as well as those from the national recovery plan Greece 2.0 to upgrade services and infrastructure. She also announced that the deadline for the submission of plans for marina upgrades had been extended to January 31. Lastly, Kefalogianni said 2024 would see the upgrade of tourism education with the provision of specialized training and upskilling opportunities for tourism professionals, as well as the digital transformation of the Greek National Tourism Organization.
