Greek journalists and travel agents recently had the chance to explore the tourism, cultural and culinary treasures of Imathia, Central Macedonia, during an event organized by local authorities.

Titled “Experience Imathia”, the event was held in Athens as an initiative by the regional unit of Imathia, aimed at positioning the destination on both the Greek and international tourism landscapes.

“Our goal is to highlight our archaeological and natural treasures, as well as the unique flavors of this blessed region of Macedonia,” said Konstantinos Kalaitzidis, Vice Governor of Imathia.

The event spotlighted Imathia’s distinctive offerings, presented through its rich historical and natural heritage.

Maria Andreadou, a representative from the regional tourism office, shared the timeless story of Imathia in a series of presentations. Starting with Ancient Greece, she navigated through the Byzantine and post-Byzantine periods, emphasizing Imathia as the birthplace of Alexander the Great.

Journalists and travel agents were introduced to key cultural landmarks such as the Polycentric Museum, the Ancient Theater of Aigai, the Royal Cluster of Temenides, and the 48 surviving Byzantine churches—12 of which are open to the public.

Andreadou also emphasized the importance of the Holy Monastery of the Virgin of Soumela, a significant monument of Orthodox tradition and a symbol of Pontic Hellenism.

During the event, officials highlighted that Veria, the capital of Imathia, and its surrounding areas are known for their rich culinary traditions, drawing from Pontic and Minor Asian influences.

To promote this heritage, the Veria Municipality has launched the “Veria Menu Gastronomy” initiative, aimed at showcasing the region’s traditional recipes made with local ingredients. Some of the standout dishes include compotes, peaches, revani (a local dessert), beef, peppers, and tomatoes.

The event also highlighted Naoussa’s renowned wine production, with the unveiling of an updated tourism map titled “Naoussa, the Land of Sour Wine”. This collaboration with the Winemakers & Vine Growers Association of Naoussa highlights 25 wineries in the sour wine zone, offering insights into the area’s distinctive wine production.

Imathia is intensifying efforts to promote itself as a premier destination with new initiatives like the 2025 “Alexander of the Universe” events, which will feature participation from international and local institutions. Additionally, the “Imathia Quality” initiative aims to represent the region at both domestic and international events.

“Visitors to Imathia, whether for a day trip or a longer stay, will have the chance to experience the culture of the Macedonians,” Imathia’s vice governor, Konstantinos  Kalaitzidis, concluded.
