Harry Theoharis, Greece’s former tourism minister, has formally submitted his candidacy for the position of Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism). The announcement was made in late December in Madrid, alongside the presentation of his mission statement and an official endorsement letter from Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

“It is an honor to take this step and pledge my dedication to advancing sustainable, inclusive, and impactful global tourism,” Theoharis said in an announcement. “UN Tourism holds the potential to be a cornerstone for the future of our industry, fostering development that is not only sustainable but also universally accessible and beneficial to all.”

Theoharis, who served as Greece’s tourism minister during a period of significant global challenges (from June 2019 until September 2021), including the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasized the importance of a renewed vision for the UN Tourism. Drawing from his tenure, during which he collaborated closely with the agency, Theoharis outlined his strategy to address contemporary challenges through strengthened partnerships, transparency, and ethical governance.

“My candidacy is rooted in the need to make UN Tourism stronger, more effective, transparent, and impactful,” Theoharis explained. “By enhancing public-private partnerships and integrating all levels of governance, we can empower Member States to leverage tourism as a driver of national development and global peacekeeping.”

Theoharis also highlighted the importance of re-engaging key nations currently absent from the UNWTO. “Reaching measurable and meaningful success in assisting Member States will bolster the organization’s relevance and attract the participation of influential countries,” he added.

Greek PM Mitsotakis praised Theoharis’ leadership, stating, “As Greece’s minister of tourism, he successfully led the tourism sector through a period of unprecedented challenges, including the pandemic. His decisive actions and bold vision ensured resilience and laid the foundation for long-term sustainable growth. He will make Greece proud.”

As part of his campaign, Theoharis emphasized his commitment to collaboration and inclusivity, underlining the role of tourism as a unifying force. “Together, we can transform UN Tourism, turning a new page for its future while holding everyone’s hands in this journey,” he said.
