The monument will draw inspiration from the “Kolossos” statue, one of the Seven Wonders of the World that was allegedly ruined some 2,220 years ago. Mr. Yiannopoulos says “the new monument will be a landmark technical achievement for Greece and an international reference point that will emanate national identity messages of Greek presence in international developments.” Artists from around the world will be invited to submit their plans by the end of this summer. As well, visitors to Rodos will soon be able to soak in the sights of some of the rare plants and trees that existed on the island in the times of the Knights of St John. Baron MarcRene de Montalambent has funded the creation of the garden with these rare species in memory of his son. The garden will turned over to the municipality. The site will be used for special occasions and municipal authorities agreed to assist the baron in every way they can. Stella Karavokyrou, director of the Hellenic Tourism Organization‘s Rodos branch, said that the garden and the land on which it is located will be made available for various events connected with conferences and incentive trips.
