And it looks like prices are going even higher. According to a study by BTI UK Hogg Robinson, which was published by the Hellenic Travel and Tourism Agents’ Association, last year Greek hotels moved from being the seventh most expensive in the world to the fourth most expensive for business travelers. Athens, says the study, moved up from being the 11th most expensive city in the world to the sixth most expensive in the world for overnight business travelers. Worst still, when compared with all other major cities on the European continent, up-market lodgings in the Greek capital were the most expensive after Moscow. The year before, 1998, Athens held the fifth spot as the most expensive city in the world for business travelers. The study says Greek hotel prices increased an average 5.4% last year when compared with the year before, while on a worldwide average hotel prices increased an average 3.5%. Rates in China and Hong Kong dropped 40% last year, which took both from first place in 1998 to 34th spot last year.
