Subsidies For Olympic Aviation On Unprofitable Routes

Olympic’s domestic subsidiary carrier, Olympic Aviation, gets some 10.3 million euros (3.5 billion drachmas) annually in government subsidies for operating flights to nine island destinations considered highly unprofitable.

Ten routes to islands such as Astypalaia, Icaria, Milos, Skyros, Karpathos, Kassos, and Lemnos were awarded to Olympic Aviation, a subsidiary of Olympic Airways, in the first tender.

Belavia, a small company that lost out in the contest, subsequently filed a complaint with the Council of State. The administrative court issued a negative ruling. The subsidized route scheme went into operation on December 28.
