Destinations news Scenic Diakopto-Kalavryta Cog Rail Route Renewed by GTP editing team 1 August 2004 written by GTP editing team 1 August 2004 0 comments Share 0FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 7 Hellenic Railways Organization announced last month that it has completed most of the renovation project being carried out on the popular scenic railway line connecting Diakopto and Kalavryta. It said the Diakopto-Kalavryta Cog Railway system is ready to receive the new trains that have been ordered by the organization, and enthusiastic summer passengers. But according to the relevant study carried out, the project includes extensive maintenance works on each of the 10 metal bridges along the route, yet only the works performed on six bridges have been successfully concluded at the moment. The organization, however, says the process is well under way and that completion is due much earlier than expected. It added that all works would be completed before the new and heavier rolling stock would be placed on the route. The reconstruction works on the Diakopto-Kalavryta route, started on July 7 of last year, will cost some 6.5 million euros. The refurbishment works of the existing infrastructure – the cog railway system is 22.845m long – and the construction of a new superstructure with the use of new materials throughout the line (apart from the cog part of the route) have been concluded.
