Specially-trained volunteers advise on the major sights to see in Athens.

Athenians that responded to Athens Mayor Dora Bakoyannis’ call for volunteers now man a number of City of Athens info booths daily from 10.00 to 20.00 and will continue to do so through to September.

The specially-trained volunteers advise on the major sights to see in Athens, including, the ancient monuments, museums and art galleries, but also the lesser-known delights, such as the city’s revamped neighbourhoods, among them the bustling Gazi and Psyrri districts.

Visitors can learn how to move around Athens easily, as well as sample the vast choice of entertainment – including the city’s extensive arts and culture program, and dining options.

City of Athens information booths are located at seven central city points: Syntagma Square – Ermou and Filellinon St.; Syntagma Square – Amalias Ave, opposite the Grande Bretagne Hotel; Acropolis – Dionysiou Areopagitou St.; Dionysiou Areopagitou and Makryianni St.; Roman Agora – Adrianou and Asomaton St.; Klafthmonos Square – along Stadiou St.; and Vas. Amalias Ave  – Metro station.

The ongoing “Volunteer for Athens” program comes on the heels of last summer’s “Show Them the Athens You Love” project, which created an information network that successfully assisted visitors to the city during the 2004 Athens Olympic and Paralympic Games.

This initiative also aims to raise awareness and motivate Athens residents to care for and preserve the city’s recreational areas and green spaces.
