Destinations news Visitors Enthused With Greek Rock Climbing by GTP editing team 1 September 2005 written by GTP editing team 1 September 2005 0 comments Share 0FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 6 In a country with intersecting mountain ranges, thousands of natural climbing sites, a huge range of rocks (each demanding a different style of climbing) and an ideal climate, rock-climbing in Greece is slowly becoming a popular sport for both visitors and Greeks alike. Here, the sport is being promoted mostly by climbing clubs and non-professional athletes who link rock-climbing with the beauties of the natural environment. Although available throughout the country’s vast number of mountains and rock formations, the most popular destinations for rock climbing are some of the Greek islands. Kalymnos, in particular, is considered one of the islands where part of its economy is derived from rock-climbing tourism, which tends to give the island an authentic air that has disappeared from many holiday destinations. The island sports tens of sites and a plethora of routes that cater to all tastes and abilities, from the simplest to the most demanding. The rock formations are of excellent quality for athletic rock-climbing of amazing possibilities. Apart from about 200 single-pitch routes (5/2000), there are many cliffs of 10 to 200 meters, which offer many possibilities for new routes.
