Tourists Get Opportunity to Play Neolithic

Avgi village in Kastoria has created a new way to entice tourists. The powers to be have taken the area’s Neolithic past to heart and have created a tourism product where visitors get a taste of life in the Stone Age.

To experience this journey back in time, plans are to supply visitors with ground and polished stones, which they then mould into the form of weapons or implements in the same fashion as did their Neolithic forebearers.

The public will be able to take part in the activities of that time, chiseling stone and making tools, such as the point of an arrow. They will be invited to make with their own hands tools similar to those of the Neolithic age.

They will get a better understanding of the abilities of the people who lived in the Neolithic settlement and their technology. Many believe cultural archaeological tourism is successful in various alternative forms.

Avgi has other assets. It’s next to Dispilio the area’s Neolithic settlement that was developed between the 6th until at least the 4th millennium. The settlement inlcudes a lake ecosystem, where the original settlement was founded, and which now hosts an eco-museum. As well, the beautiful surrounding landscape draws visitors and, together with the archaeological site, the area could create a link with other prehistoric sites that are open to visitors in northwestern Greece and the Balkans.
