Liberalization of Ferry Boat Fares On Hold

A marine ministry decision to liberalize ferry ticket fares from Piraeus remains on hold. Earlier announcements by the minister promised liberalization by the Orthodox Easter last month, but it failed to materialize.

Provisions in the decision to liberalize ticket prices essentially set the change for April 2007. But, ferry companies want it to happen earlier because the increase in fuel prices is not reflected in current fares.

For its part, the ministry recognizes the fuel costs but wants to protect third class fares. Press reports indicate that the ministry is considering a 6% increase in fare prices until liberalization occurs.
