The first phase of the architectural competition for the design of Grandes Bay, the first tourism village at Cavo Sidero, was completed recently, nine months after its launch by the Minoan Group. Twenty-six world-renowned architects and companies from all over the world were called to participate in the competition for the detailed design of Grandes Bay. The competition was comprised of two separate interviews out of which five contestants were chosen. Two Greek contestants, one British, one German and one Spanish were the final five that were asked to submit their proposals. The presentation of the designs will be held in due course and it is anticipated that a decision will be made by October 2007. The brief that was given to the contestants outlined three prerequisites for the final design of the tourism village. The designs must incorporate the cultural and structural elements of the Cretan tradition, adopt the principles of sustainable development and employ the most technologically advanced means of environmental protection and energy consumption. It is on these three axons that Minoan Group envisages the foundation of sustainable development for the Cavo Sidero project, which is part and parcel of the group’s vision and philosophy.
