Andrew Holden’s book “Tourism Studies and the Social Sciences” was recently released in Greek by Papazisi Publications and translated by Professor Thomas Mavrodonti of the Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki. This book is the second in the series “Library of Tourism Studies,” and according to the publisher, aims to enrich tourism bibliography in Greece.

Andrew Holden’s book is based on a social science approach to understanding the significance of tourism in contemporary society and highlights tourism as an area of varied disciplines. He introduces social science disciplines and applies relevant theories to the understanding of tourism.

He investigates how the economic and political structures of society influence the forms of tourism at a global level, and subsequently considers a variety of topical issues including citizenship and social exclusion, tourism as a form of trade, consumerism, the consequences of tourism, feminism and ethics. Each chapter includes an introductory international case study to illustrate the application of a particular discipline. The book caters for students in tourism-related fields but also for members of the tourism sector as it identifies the role and significance of tourism in contemporary society.

Andrew Holden is a professor in “Environment and Tourism” at the University of Bedfordshire in the United Kingdom.
