Rodos appeared to be almost unaffected by the global economic crisis as marine tourism for the month of June showed an increase of 16.67 percent over the same period in 2008, according to official figures from the security office of the island’s port.

A total of 94 cruise ships entered the port of Rodos in June, which carried some 87,712 passengers, compared with 70,552 that had visited the island during the same period last year.

Tourism professionals of Rodos say that the tourists that disembark on the island for one day provide a “daily stimulation” to the island’s local economy and highly contribute to the funds of shopkeepers.

Estimates say that marine tourism figures for July are expected to increase from last year’s data or in the worst case they would remain on the same level.
