Germans Snub Greece For Their Holidays

The Germans are traveling with more enthusiasm than ever with the largest number of bookings made mainly to Turkey and Egypt, while Greece and Portugal have seen a drop in popularity, according to a survey by Gfk Travel Insights research firm.

According to figures provided by 1,200 German travel agents, although last minute trips to Greece are available at very low prices, Germans spent 10-25 percent less per person on last-minute bookings to Greece than they did last year.

On the contrary, Gfk said that German tourists are currently paying significantly higher prices than last summer to holiday destinations such as Egypt, the Maldives and Croatia.

The survey also showed that Greece ranked fourth in last-minute bookings, behind the Balearic Islands, Turkey and the Canary Islands, with an 8,9 percent share.

In the total market Greece was again fourth with a share of 9,2 percent, following Turkey (17,8 percent), the Balearic Islands (14,9 percent) and the Canary Islands (9,6 percent).

The data provided is from trips that were booked until June 2010.
