World Tourism Day Finds Greek Tourism Troubled

The New Acropolis Museum. On the occasion of World Tourism Day, the Culture and Tourism Ministry announced free admission to all archaeological sites, historical sites, museums and monuments.

As the tourism sector around the world came together to celebrate 2010 as the international year of biodiversity for the 31st World Tourism Day (27 September), the Hellenic Association of Travel and Tourist Agencies (HATTA) called on all of Greece’s forces to work together for a new course in tourism.

“The adoption of a modern integrated national strategy for the tourism sector is an imperative need and obligation of all for the future of Greek tourism and the economic development of our country,” HATTA said in an announcement.

HATTA did not hold its traditional World Tourism Day celebration this year, but instead made a donation to the Smile of the Child organization.

The association promised a celebration for next year’s World Tourism Day, since, according to forecasts, tourism is expected to take a turn for the best.

The Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises (SETE) said tourism must become a government priority to give the Greek economy and society its actual potential.

On its part, the Hellenic Federation of Rented Apartments & Rooms spoke in regards to sustainable tourism, “the key to saving biodiversity.”

The federation underlined that although tourism could lead the economy to the path of economic growth, it has not been treated accordingly.
New Democracy MP responsible for tourism issues, Olga Kefalogiannis, said that this year’s World Tourism Day found Greece counting losses. “The government continues to do nothing to improve things,” she said.

2011 Tourism for Tomorrow Awards

On the occasion of World Tourism Day 2011, the World Travel & Tourism Council invited tourism businesses and destinations worldwide to apply for the 2011 Tourism for Tomorrow Awards. Applicants may enter in one of four categories: Global Tourism Business, Conservation, Community Benefit, and Destination Stewardship, showcasing best practice in sustainable tourism. Applications may be submitted online on www.tourismfortomorrow.com/Apply/. The deadline for applications is 10 December 2010.
