Revamp Planned For Piraeus Port

The Piraeus Port Authority will proceed to a full upgrade of its services in 2011 in order for international cruise companies to respond in 2012 to the lifting of the cabotage restrictions for non-European Union-flag cruise ships, the port’s president and CEO, Yiorgos Anomeritis, told the Greek press last month.

According to government expectations, the Piraeus Port would play a leading role as a cruise port within the eastern Mediterranean in the coming years.

Mr. Anomeritis said the port’s upgrade service in 2011 would include the renovation of the reception areas of passenger terminal I while in June 2011 the new passenger terminal II would operate.

Also, the port for cruise ships will be expanded by six new positions to cater to next generation cruise ships.

Additional renovations include the construction of a heliport and new buses for the circulation of passengers at the port, while customer service and passenger safety will be fully upgraded.
