The Hellenic Chamber of Hotels established its first branch in Heraklio, Crete, last month and announced in a meeting that the establishment of other regional offices in key Greek tourism destinations would soon follow.

The chamber’s president, Yiorgos Tsakiris, had announced in January the establishment of such branches to support the new local government structures introduced by the Kallikratis scheme and to be in direct contact with thousands of its members.

During his opening speech at the meeting, Culture and Tourism Minister Pavlos Geroulanos said hoteliers must decide “what Crete they want” to decide what development model to follow for the island.

The minister underlined the opportunity given to implement regional development programs through the Kallikratis plan.

He also referred to the special zoning plan for tourism, which should be ready in July and would help to make effective interventions to improve infrastructure and tourism residence on the island.
