Event News Diving Festival Kicks Off This Month On Kalymnos by GTP editing team 1 July 2011 written by GTP editing team 1 July 2011 0 comments Share 0FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 8 Kalymnos, the sponge diver’s island in the Dodekanissos complex, will become the meeting point for free diving fans this month. The Kalymnos Diving Festival, to be held 18-24 July, commemorates those that perished harvesting sponges at sea. During the festival visitors will become familiar with sponge-diving methods (deep-sea helmet, fernez, modern) and can attend or participate in the Skandalopetra Freediving Games 20-24 July. Skandalopetra (bell-stone) was the equipment sponge divers used since ancient times to dive great depths (40-60 meters) and collect sponges. This method reappears with the Skandalopetra Freediving Games in memory of the brave islanders.
