Destinations news Laganas Tourism Image Questioned by GTP editing team 1 August 2011 written by GTP editing team 1 August 2011 0 comments Share 0FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 20 The tourism image of Laganas, Zakynthos, and the resort’s notorious reputation was questioned last month after a 19-year-old British tourist was stabbed to death and four other holidaymakers injured following a brawl with a local taxi driver. “Laganas is a beautiful place and needs a new face… The time has come for the island to renew its tourism product,” Zakynthos Deputy Mayor Panagiotis Kolyris told the press after the incident. According to reports, in the early hours of 13 July five British tourists got into a verbal argument with 21-year-old Greek taxi driver Stelios Morfis, which led to the latter lashing out at the tourists with a knife. All five tourists were said to have received stab wounds with those of Robert James Sevvage from south central England, proving fatal. The Greek taxi driver and a friend present during the brawl were both arrested. Reports said the killing of the British tourist was “an accident awaiting to happen” as foreign visitors tend to get out of control and become violent to locals due to drink-fueled binges.
