Destinations news Plato’s Academy Site To Receive Upgrade by GTP editing team 1 September 2011 written by GTP editing team 1 September 2011 0 comments Share 0FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 9 “The upgrade and unification of Plato’s Academy is a project that has been delayed greatly… Plato’s Academy is a source of wealth for Athens and it must be promoted as such,” Culture and Tourism Minister Pavlos Geroulanos said recently. Last month the Central Archaeological Council (KAS) approved a study of the museum storage areas and the unification of parts of the Plato’s Academy (Akadimia Platonos) archaeological site in Athens. According to reports, by early September Government Vice President Theodoros Pagalos and Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis are to present a broader plan for the regeneration of downtown Athens. The upgrade of Plato’s Academy is said to be one of the key parameters. According to the study approved by KAS, four old storage areas that are currently inside the archaeological site and contain finds of past excavations are to be transferred to a new location so those spaces would open to the public. Plans also include planting the surrounding area and establishing a path linking Plato’s Academy to Kerameikos. Also, in November an international architectural tender will be launched for a planned Archaeological Museum in Athens based on the same standards of those followed for the New Acropolis Museum. The new museum will exhibit many of the hundreds of thousands of archaeological findings that are currently in storage due to lack of space.
