Inspections revealed that coastal managers had failed to maintain the required cleanliness of the beaches, protect the environment and provide the necessary services to bathers. The ‘Blue Flag’ award of the following coasts were revoked for 2011: Maleme Coast (Platania, Chania); Petra Coast (Lesvos); Anaxos Coast (Lesvos); Kalamia Coast (Corinthia); Mavrovouni 3 Coast (East Mani, Lakonia); Koubara Coast (Ios, Cyclades); Monolithi Coast (Preveza); and Kiani Coast (Preveza). The coasts are now banned from the 2012 award process. The “Blue Flag” is a voluntary eco-label awarded to beaches across the world.
