According to INKA, the tourist protection office received a total of 9,262 complaints. “Along with the tourists, who on many occasions pay unreasonable high prices for their vacation, locals are obliged to pay a much higher cost of living throughout the years despite the low quality service offered,” INKA said. Price surveys showed that the cost of living in suburban areas is at least 18 percent higher than that in the capitals of prefectures, while in purely tourist areas, especially during peak season, prices show deviations of 25-38 percent.
