Athens International Airport (AIA) announced in late January a new special incentive for the 2012 winter period that corresponds to a discount on passenger charges ranging between 25 and 50 percent and applies to low fare tickets to all routes out of Athens.

The program began last month and is valid until 30 April 2012 and applies to low fares of all airlines operating out of Athens, on both domestic and international routes. The participation of airlines in the program is optional.

AIA’s initiative aims to boost air traffic in the Athens market during the low traffic winter season and encourage the introduction of lower fares for passengers.

Passenger traffic at Athens International Airport dropped 6.5 percent last year. Domestic passenger traffic declined 12 percent to 4.9 million and international arrivals dropped 3.1 percent to 9.5 million.

Details on the new incentive can by found on AIA’s website www.aia.gr.
