Plans For Seaplanes Emerge Again

A joint ministerial decision with the Infrastructure, Transport and Networks Ministry to establish waterways in Greece (and this way attract seaplane companies to strengthen the transport of Greece’s border areas) is under preparation, according to an announcement made by the Development, Competitiveness and Shipping Ministry.

The new legislative framework for seaplanes is said to refer to the creation of a main waterway as a central base in Attica and 12 smaller waterways in the region. The waterways are to be created via the process of Public Private Partnerships (SDIT).

According to the press, the Infrastructure, Transport and Networks Ministry is studying the previous legislative framework for the creation of waterways through fast track investments.

The establishment of an integrated network of waterways has been mentioned occasionally by government figures, including former Prime Minister George Papandreou, but until now nothing has been done.

For years the Greek State failed to implement a law for the operation of waterways, press reports said.
