The grand prize was a free trip to the Ionian Islands. Some 5,000 Britons were said to have participated in the contest. Within the framework of London hosting this year’s Olympic Games (27 July-12 August), the Region of the Ionian Islands launched a campaign recently to promote the history, culture and options the island group can offer UK visitors. A Greek pavilion was set up on 29 June at Waterloo station in London, one of the most central stations of the UK capital, and some 500,000 transit visitors were informed about the history of the islands and the Olympic movement. “The region aims to remind the British that the Ionian Islands are ideal holiday destinations but also the birthplace of culture and the Olympic spirit,” a press release said. Vice Regional Governor of the Ionian Islands, Christos Skourtis, inaugurated the event and attended a meeting with UK tour operators. He discussed further promotion of the region’s destinations for the rest of this season and for 2013. When talking to the press, Mr. Skourtis said since Greece’s recent elections, things have changed. “Everyone understands tourism is our hope,” he said.
