Mitsatsos. The extensive participation of the citizens and the evident support of local stakeholders of the city of Kavala recently crowned the workshop and inauguration of the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association’s (HELMEPA) exhibition entitled “Awareness on Marine Environment, Shipping and Sciences,” at what was the fifth stop of the campaign, a great success. This is a HELMEPA initiative that is being implemented across 12 Greek cities and their surrounds over three years with the kind support of the UK-based independent charity, The Lloyd’s Register Educational Trust* (The LRET). Present at the Workshop titled “Marine Litter: a problem that concerns us all” were representatives of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, the Municipalities of Kavala and Thassos, the Coast Guard and other local stakeholders, teachers, students and environmentally sensitive members of the public. HELMEPA’s awareness campaign aims to inform and foster a heightened environmental consciousness, especially among the younger generations. *The Lloyd’s Register Educational Trust (The LRET) funds education, training and research programmes in transportation, science, engineering, technology and the safety of life, worldwide for the benefit of all.
