An innovative smartphone application, under the name “Amazing Athens,” geared to promote the Greek capital as a destination, was presented yesterday, Wednesday, 28 November, by Greek Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni at the Acropolis Museum. The application created for mobile phones and tablets aims to provide useful information to tourists visiting Athens and enhance their travel experience in the Greek capital. According to Greek Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni, the “Amazing Athens” application will not burden the Greek State financially and any income will be used for the creation of new similar applications. The ministry aims to create similar applications for other Greek cities. “Amazing Athens intends to highlight the modern face of Athens and show users that the capital is a city that offers options for culture, entertainment, sports, and can be visited throughout the year,” the tourism minister said. Mrs. Kefalogianni stressed that the new application is an attempt to overturn the impression that “Athens is just a stopover destination before visiting the Greek islands.” The “Amazing Athens” app will be available in English and released before the start of the next tourism season. It will gradually be translated in other languages to appeal to the country’s target markets such as China, Russia and Spain. The application will be available for iOS devices initially, with Android set to follow. The initiative is a result of the cooperation of the Tourism Ministry with the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Centre for Hellenic Studies, located at Simon Frazer University in Vancouver, Canada.
