Ryanair To Open New Hub In Chania, Crete

Ryanair Boeing 737-800Chania, Crete, will be low cost carrier Ryanair’s first Greek hub and 55th base in Europe as of next spring, according to an announcement made by the airline’s official Kate Sherry on Thursday, 20 December.

During a press conference held at the Chania Chamber on Crete, Ms. Sherry said from April to October 2013, Chania Airport “Ioannis Daskalogiannis” will serve 26 European destinations with 106 flights per week and a total of 500,000 passengers.

Out of the 26 routes Ryanair will fly from Chania Airport, 11 are new: Billund, Bremen, Bristol, Eindhoven, Katowice, Marseille, Memmingen, Venice, Vilnius, Warsaw and Thessaloniki.

A Boeing 737-800 will be parked in Chania Airport on a permanent basis and, according to reports, the extension of the company’s activities in the Cretan city will create some 500 job positions.
