Presentation of the ““2013 Year Of Gastronomy In Santorini” initiative by Thira Mayor Anastasios Nikolaos Zorzos (first from left). In a presentation held yesterday, 17 January, at the Acropolis Museum, Thira Mayor Anastasios Nikolaos Zorzos presented the initiative and extended an open invitation for all to participate by incorporating new ideas and actions. Through the “2013 Year Of Gastronomy in Santorini” initiative, the municipality hopes to boost tourism since the island is already listed among the leading gastronomic destinations in regards to its local cuisine. In the context of actions, the mayor said local authorities and wineries have been invited to participate; restaurants have been requested to include Santorini dishes on their menus; and hotels and rooms-to-let have been requested to include some of the island’s local products on their breakfast buffets. Santorini is highly appreciated for its local products that include the famous “fava” split peas and “tomataki” fresh tomatoes (photo left) and its vast variety of wines. The official launch of the initiative “2013 Year Of Gastronomy In Santorini” will be held in an open event at the Bellonio Cultural Center in Fira, Santorini, on 3 February 2013 at 6:30pm.
