Rethink Athens logoOn 27 February 2013, the winner of the European architectural competition “Rethink Athens” will be announced. The competition launched 21 May 21 2012.

It is reminded that the competition involves the creation of a new city center, a multifaceted intervention centered on Panepistimiou Street, extending from Amalias Avenue to Patission Street and ending at a “brand new” Omonia Square.

The main objective of “Rethink Athens” is to stop the increased downgrading and to revive the center of Athens with multiple functions related to trade, services, housing, entertainment and culture while simultaneously encouraging several activities.

European Union funds will cover the development of the project. According to reports, the total construction will cost some 200 million euros and last some two years, setting 2015 as an achievable goal.

The competition was organized and funded by the Onassis Foundation and held under the auspices and in collaboration with the Ministries of Environment, Energy and Climate Change and of Infrastructure, Transport and Networks, the Attiko Metro S.A., the Region of Attica and the Municipality of Athens.
