apokria 13_posterThe City of Athens will stage a series of festive Carnival events from 7 to 18 March 2013 with an aim to spread a message of optimism and joy to locals and visitors.

The carnival fun starts at the Varvakeios Agora and will spread to Plaka, Monastiraki, Syntagma Square, Zappeion, Filopappou Hill, various neighborhoods of the capital and to the Friendship Clubs and Cultural and Sports Centers of the City of Athens.

Events will kick off on Tsiknopempti (Smoky Thursday), 7 March, at 10.45am, at the Varvakeios Agora on Athinas Street, with a concert and a traditional fest of meat dishes.

Children’s events will take place on a daily basis but the main hightlight will be on Sunday, 10 March, at Zappeio, where a big party is planned between 11am and 2pm.

The curtain will fall for this year’s carnival season on Kathara Deftera (Clean Monday), 18 March, which is when the Orthodox Lent period begins.
