Heraklion, Crete, was voted the “Most Improved Destination” for 2012 for its upgraded port by cruise executives from the Cruise Insight magazine, during the SeaTrade international cruise shipping exhibition taking place in Miami, US.

“The new award for the port comes to confirm once again that the efforts to upgrade destination Heraklion are gaining ground,” said Heraklion Port Authority’s president and CEO, Ioannis Bras.

The award from Cruise Insight follows two previous major distinctions for Heraklion as the destination has also received the “National Project Excellence” award at the 26th Intergrating Project Management Standards World Congress last October and the “Port of the Year” award at the Seatrade Insider Cruise Awards last November (Heraklion had came in second place).

“The opening of markets in Asia will bring significant changes in the coming years to the global cruise market and the proper organization and openness of Greece and its ports should be made known beforehand,” he said.
