Hersonissos, Crete, is making attempts to become a wedding destination for international travelers, according to a press conference given last week on the Hersonissos Municipality’s policies and actions for sustainable tourism development. According to reports, Mayor of Hersonissos Zacharias Doxastakis said the municipality has requested for the appropriate ministry to allow civil wedding ceremonies in Hersonissos take place every day of the week and not just on one specific day, as it stands today. He also requested that civil marriage ceremonies be allowed to take place anywhere on the island, including on beaches or in hotels. “This way the destination will be more attractive to tourists who wish to get married in Hersonissos,” he said. During the press conference, the mayor presented the municipality’s sustainable tourism development programs, the destination profile of Hersonissos and the progress of the tourism satellite account that was launched last year. In regards to the sustainable tourism development programs, Mayor Doxastakis referred to the municipality’s strategic goals that include the upgrade of tourism based on improving basic public infrastructure; strengthening local entrepreneurship; and implementing a protection policy for the natural environment.
