Greece Joins International Museum Day Celebration

The New Acropolis Museum. On the occasion of World Tourism Day, the Culture and Tourism Ministry announced free admission to all archaeological sites, historical sites, museums and monuments.

museum dayGreek museums will take part in the worldwide celebration of International Museum Day and open free of charge on Saturday 18 May 2013.

The International Council of Museums (ICOM) established International Museum Day in 1977 to increase public awareness of the role of museums in the development of society. Momentum has been rising unabated ever since.

Last year, International Museum Day garnered record-breaking participation with almost 32,000 museums hosting events in more than 129 countries.

This year, the theme of the International Museum Day will be “Museums (memory + creativity) = social change.”
