Athos. Thirteen Russian travel agents that exclusively handle VIP clients, were recently introduced to the tourism possibilities of the Mount Athos area during a familiarization trip organized by MidEast Travel. During 21-22 May, the travel agents visited the area’s luxury infrastructure and were treated to authentic recipes from the Athonite tradition made by Monk Epifanios o Milopotaminos and chefs Ilias Gotsis and Giannis Kritikos. The fam trip included sailing around Mount Athos and tours of Athonite vineyards, while visitors were also given the chance to watch the creation of Athonite icons. According to the Mount Athos Area Organization, the Russian travel agents expressed enthusiasm for the area’s differentiated product, along with the level of services, quality of infrastructure and uniqueness of the local gastronomy/oenology. The organization has announced plans to launch culinary and religious events as part of its promotional campaign to the markets of Russia, Ukraine and Azerbaijan in its effort to attract visitors that search for thematic tourism.
