hatta_logoThe Hellenic Association of Travel and Tourist Agencies (HATTA) is warning consumers of a possible “pyramid scheme” scam.

According to HATTA, it has been reported that individuals or groups are holding “seminars” in various Greek cities, through which they are seeking to “recruit” participants in a “business” that provides low-cost holiday packages. The fee for each new recruit is 250 euros.

The new recruits of the “business” are then called to enroll new people. Their payment is set at 50 euros for each new member they persuade to join the “business.” The new members are then called to refer new followers and so forth (pyramid scheme).

HATTA suspects a possible scam and has already informed the relevant authorities to investigate the matter and prevent the phenomenon of “possible consumer fraud and tax evasion” from spreading further.

The association also advises consumers to carefully choose the business that will arrange their holidays to avoid unpleasant situations.

When checking out travel agencies, consumers should look for the GNTO seal.
