According to local press reports, the incident happened in the town of Mykonos when a Greek driver, in an attempt to avoid hitting a group of young children that ran into the street, made an abrupt turn and accidentally ran over the bird. Despite receiving first aid, the pelican died after a short time. The pelican killed was named “Georgia,” the local press mentioned. Three pelicans live on Mykonos on a permanent basis. Guests usually refer to all of them as “Petros,” which was the name of the first pelican on the island back in 1952. Pelicans are frequently seen walking freely on Mykonos and have become a trademark of the island. One can easily be spotted roaming around the town among the many tourists.
