The extension project sees the creation of six new berths that will accommodate cruise liners in excess of 300 meters in length, known as “new generation” cruise ships. The head of the Piraeus Port Authority, Giorgos Anomeritis, said a tender for the construction of the three first berths, a project budgeted at 120 million euros, is expected to launch soon. Last month, cruise passenger numbers at Piraeus reached a new record. According to the Piraeus Port Authority, transit passengers at Greece’s main port jumped 43.22 percent to 329,540 in August, from 230,096 the same month last year, which is the highest number the country has seen in the last six years.
