Event News Athens To Host “Best Marathon Runner of the Year” Award Gala by GTP editing team 24 September 2013 written by GTP editing team 24 September 2013 0 comments Share 0FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 9 Athens – the birthplace of the marathon race – is getting ready to host a major new international event this November on the sidelines of this year’s Athens Classic Marathon. Starting from this year, the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS*) will inaugurate a new award celebration dedicated to the Best Marathon Runner of the Year. More than 330 AIMS members and all international Marathon Races organizers are called to nominate the best male and female marathon runner of the current year, based on a series of criteria set by AIMS. The final nomination and award of the Best Marathon Runners will take place during a Gala to be held in Athens, on 8 November 2013, two days before the 2013 Athens Classic Marathon event. The award ceremony will take place at the Athens College. The event is expected to become the major commemorative event of the Marathon movement worldwide as one of AIMS main objectives is to foster and promote distance running throughout the world. Parallel to the award of the Best Marathon Runner of the Year, special awards at personal and community level will be made, at the presence of important sport figures and celebrities. The event is organized by AIMS and the Hellenic Amateur Athletic Association (SEGAS), under the sponsorship of OPAP S.A. The 31st Athens Classic Marathon will take place on Sunday, 10 November 2013, along with the 5 and 10km Road Races, as well as the 1000m Kids Run and the Special Olympics Hellas race to be held along the Marathon course this year.
