GNTO Launches “Greece From The Top” Action On International Mountain Day

International Mountain Day is celebrated on Wednesday 11 December and the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) is promoting, via social media, the mountain regions of Greece through an action entitled “Greece from the Top” in cooperation with the National Technical University of Athens.

The aim of the “Greece from the Top” action is to inform users of social media channels that the country does not only offer “sun and sea” but also has a huge natural wealth of unique mountain destinations scattered throughout the country, ideal to visit during all four seasons of the year.

From 11 December, GNTO will be posting photos (with brief info) of mountainous Greece on its Facebook and Pinterest profiles and invites all to share their Greek mountain photos.

The owner of the photo that will receive the most “Likes” by 3pm on Sunday 15 December will win the coffee table book “GREECE the land of Diversity, by N. Petrou & the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature.

International Mountain Day

The United Nations (UN) General Assembly proclaimed 11 December to be International Mountain Day to draw attention to the important roles that mountainous regions play in water and food supply. International Mountain Day is an opportunity to create awareness about the importance of mountains to life, to highlight the opportunities and constraints in mountain development and to build partnerships that will bring positive change to the world’s mountains and highlands.

International Mountain Day will be celebrated this year under the theme “Mountains – Key to a Sustainable Future.” The UN aims for this year’s theme to help raise awareness on how new opportunities can bring benefits to highland and lowland communities without contributing to the degradation of mountain socio-ecosystems.
